The Catholic Response

The Greek word used for 'brothers' (adelphoi) can mean cousins, kinsmen, or close relatives, not just biological siblings. This was common in both Hebrew and Greek usage; Abraham calls Lot his 'brother' in Genesis 13:8, though Lot was his nephew. The Church Fathers were nearly unanimous on this point. Jerome, Athanasius, and even the Protestant reformers Luther and Calvin all affirmed Mary's perpetual virginity. The Catechism teaches that Jesus is Mary's only son, and that the 'brothers of Jesus' are close relations (CCC 500).

Iran's apology to its neighbors, however partial, and America's demand for total surrender both need measuring against that same standard. Peace is not the absence of enemies; it is the presence of justice.

The Catechism doesn't mince words: "All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to 'unveil' the future" (CCC 2116). This includes horoscopes. The desire to know what's coming is deeply human, but God already told you the ending: He wins, and He wants you with Him. That's a better forecast than Mercury retrograde.

Saints Perpetua and Felicity

Perpetua was a 22-year-old nursing mother from a wealthy family in Carthage. She kept a prison diary that is one of the earliest known writings by a Christian woman. The night before her execution, she recorded a vision of herself turning into a man to wrestle the devil in an arena. Felicity, her slave, gave birth in prison just two days before they were both killed together, erasing every social boundary between them.

Their feast is today, and their story of a noblewoman and her slave dying side by side mirrors the Prodigal Son's lesson: the Father's house has no class system.

Trivia Answer

B . Under Leviticus 11:7, pigs were considered unclean animals. For a Jewish son to be feeding pigs meant he had sunk below the lowest rung of society. Jesus chose this detail deliberately to show just how far the son had fallen, and how far the Father's mercy reached to bring him back.
