"Why do Catholics call Mary 'ever-virgin'? The Bible clearly mentions Jesus' brothers and sisters. Mark 6:3 names them. She obviously had other children."
The Catholic Response
The Greek word 'adelphoi' used in Mark 6:3 can mean brothers, cousins, or kinsmen. It's the same word used in Genesis 14:14 (Septuagint) where Lot is called Abraham's 'brother,' even though he was his nephew. The early Church was unanimous on this: St. Jerome, St. Athanasius, and even the Protestant reformers Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli all affirmed Mary's perpetual virginity. The Catechism teaches that the "brothers of Jesus" are close relations, not children of Mary (CCC 500), and this belief was held universally for 1,500 years before anyone questioned it.

We know almost nothing about Jesus' grandparents from Scripture. Everything we know comes from the Protoevangelium of James, a second-century text that describes Anne as barren and elderly when she finally conceived Mary. The early Church honored them specifically because their faithfulness was invisible: no miracles, no prophecies, just decades of quiet fidelity that produced the woman who would say yes to God.
July 26 is their feast day, and today's Gospel about hidden treasure fits them perfectly: the Kingdom was hidden in their ordinary family life long before anyone recognized it.
