The Objection
"The Bible is enough. Catholics added all these extra traditions that aren't in Scripture. Sola Scriptura is the only safe rule of faith."
The Catholic Response
The Bible itself never claims to be the sole rule of faith. In fact, Paul tells the Thessalonians to "hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours" (2 Thessalonians 2:15), placing oral tradition on equal footing with his written letters. The canon of Scripture itself was determined by Church councils at Hippo (393 AD) and Carthage (397 AD), meaning the Church's tradition decided which books belong in the Bible in the first place. The Catechism teaches that Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition "flow from the same divine wellspring" and together make up a single deposit of faith entrusted to the Church (CCC 80).

"Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him."
Prudence (CCC 1806)
The Catechism calls prudence "the charioteer of the virtues" because it guides every other virtue toward right action (CCC 1806). Knowing when to stop is not failure; it is the same clear-eyed honesty Jesus praised when he told the crowd to count the cost before building.

"They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again."
Just War Doctrine (CCC 2307-2309)
The Church insists that war is permissible only as a last resort, after every peaceful alternative has been exhausted, and only when the damage inflicted by the aggressor is "lasting, grave, and certain" (CCC 2309). Economic brinkmanship that starves civilians and inflates global prices demands the same moral scrutiny we apply to bullets; suffering does not become just because it is bloodless.

"Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death, relentless as Sheol."
Sacrament of Matrimony (CCC 1601-1605)
The Church teaches that marriage is not just a contract but a visible sign of Christ's own love for his Church, a love that holds fast through suffering and death (CCC 1612). These strangers giving their talents so dying couples can make a covenant are living proof that grace works through ordinary people with florist vans and cake spatulas.

John 13:16-20
"After he had washed the feet of his disciples, Jesus said to them: ‘I tell you most solemnly, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the man who sent him. ‘Now that you know this, happiness will be yours if you behave accordingly. I am not speaking about all of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must be fulfilled: Someone who shares my table rebels against me."

St. Pius V
Before becoming pope, he was an inquisitor so poor that he reportedly walked barefoot through the snow to carry out his duties. As pope, he kept his Dominican habit and refused to wear the red papal shoes, scandalizing the Vatican court. He also personally cooked meals for the sick in Rome's hospitals.
His feast falls on April 30, and his radical servant leadership mirrors today's Gospel, where Jesus insists that no servant is greater than his master.

Trivia Answer
B . Psalm 41 is a psalm of David, and the 'close friend' who lifted his heel is traditionally understood as Ahithophel, David's counselor who defected to Absalom's rebellion (2 Samuel 15:12). Jesus deliberately applied David's words to Judas, revealing himself as the true anointed king betrayed at his own table.
