The Objection
"Why do Catholics need sacraments? Can't I just have a personal relationship with God without all the rituals?"
The Catholic Response
Jesus himself established the sacraments precisely because we are not disembodied souls floating in space. We are body-and-soul creatures who encounter God through physical things: water, bread, oil, touch. In today's Gospel, Jesus breathes on the apostles and gives them the power to forgive sins (John 20:22-23), instituting the sacrament of Reconciliation through a physical, tangible act. The Catechism teaches that sacraments are "powers that come forth from the Body of Christ" and are necessary for salvation because God chose to save us through matter, not despite it (CCC 1116, 1129).
