Pope Leo: Church must bear witness to truth in charity
Pope Leo XIV addressed a delegation from the German Archdiocese of Cologne, calling on the Church worldwide to offer mutual support across dioceses and to bear witness to truth rooted in charity. The Pope's words speak directly to the Church's role in a fractured world.

The Objection
"Why do Catholics have seven sacraments? The Bible only mentions Baptism and Communion. The rest are man-made traditions."
The Catholic Response
All seven sacraments have roots in Scripture, even if the word 'sacrament' isn't always used. James 5:14 describes anointing the sick with oil and the prayer of elders. John 20:22-23 shows Jesus breathing on the apostles and giving them power to forgive sins, which is Confession. The early Church Fathers like St. Ambrose (d. 397) wrote about Confirmation as distinct from Baptism, and the Council of Trent (1547) formally defined what had been practiced for over a thousand years (CCC 1210, 1113).

"Thus says the Lord: Do what is right and just. Rescue the victim from the hand of his oppressor. Do not wrong or oppress the resident alien, the orphan, or the widow."
CCC 1897-1903 (Authority and the Common Good)
Catholic Social Teaching insists that political authority exists only to serve the common good, not to score points (CCC 1903). When government shutdowns leave workers unpaid and borders unmanaged, and when citizens feel their only recourse is the street, something has broken in the covenant between a people and their leaders.

CCC 1005 (Death and Christian Hope)
Today's Gospel lands differently when five people left home this morning and never came back. Jesus spoke John 14 precisely because death is sudden and terrifying; his promise of a prepared place is not sentimental comfort but a steel beam driven into the ground of grief (CCC 1005).

Laborem Exercens (John Paul II, On Human Work)
John Paul II wrote that work is how a person participates in creation itself (Laborem Exercens, 25). This restaurant doesn't just feed the hungry; it gives people who once slept on pavement the dignity of an apron and a craft, which is exactly the kind of preferential option for the poor the Church has always demanded.

St. Joseph the Worker
Pope Pius XII created this feast in 1955 specifically to counter Communist May Day celebrations, essentially baptizing a socialist holiday. Joseph is the only saint whose hands Jesus held as a toddler while learning to hammer nails. The quiet irony: the boy he taught carpentry would one day be nailed to wood.
May 1 is his feast day, and today's May Day protests over workers' rights connect directly to the Church's insistence that labor has sacred dignity.

Trivia Answer
B . Pius XII created the feast to offer a Christian alternative to Communist May Day rallies that were drawing Catholic workers across Europe. He wanted to show that the Church, not Marx, was the true champion of the dignity of labor.
