John 3:1-8
"There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leading Jew, who came to Jesus by night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who comes from God; for no one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him. ’ Jesus answered: ‘I tell you most solemnly, unless a man is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God. ’ Nicodemus said, ‘How can a grown man be born."

The Objection
"Catholics believe you're saved by works, not by faith. That contradicts the Bible, which says we're saved by grace through faith alone."
The Catholic Response
The Catholic Church has never taught that we earn salvation through our own efforts. The Council of Trent (1547) declared that 'none of those things which precede justification, whether faith or works, merit the grace itself of justification; for if it is by grace, it is no longer by works' (Decree on Justification, Chapter 8). What the Church does teach, following James 2:24, is that saving faith is living faith, faith that bears fruit in love and obedience, not a one-time intellectual assent. Paul himself told the Philippians to 'work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you' (Philippians 2:12-13). Grace does the saving; works are the evidence that grace is alive in you.

Proverbs 20:18 |
"Plans made with advice succeed; with wise direction wage your war."
Just War Doctrine (CCC 2309)
The Catechism sets strict conditions before any use of military force: the damage inflicted by the aggressor must be lasting, grave, and certain, and all other means of resolution must be practically exhausted (CCC 2309). A naval blockade is an act of war under international law, which means the moral calculus isn't optional; it's required before a single ship moves into position.

Psalm 127:1 |
"Unless the LORD build the house, they labor in vain who build. Unless the LORD guard the city, the guard keeps watch in vain."
Fifth Commandment and Human Dignity (CCC 2258-2262)
No amount of wealth or influence can manufacture the safety that comes from a society built on mutual respect for human life. The Church teaches that every act of violence against a person is an offense against God who created them (CCC 2258), and no zip code, no matter how expensive, exempts anyone from that brokenness.
Reflect → What do you place your security in: locks and alarms, or a community where people actually look out for each other?

Sirach 10:2 |
"As the people's judge, so are his ministers; as the head of a city, so are its inhabitants."
CCC 1897-1899 (Authority and the Common Good)
Catholic teaching insists that political authority exists solely to serve the common good, not personal interest (CCC 1898). When public servants betray that trust, accountability isn't partisan revenge; it's the basic hygiene of a just society, something the Church calls a moral obligation for citizens and leaders alike.
Reflect → Do you hold your own 'side' to the same standard you hold the opposition, or does loyalty quietly override justice?

Psalm 19:2 |
"The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament proclaims the works of his hands."
CCC 32 (God Known Through Creation)
The Catechism teaches that the beauty of creation is a path to knowing God, that the world's order and goodness point to a Creator who transcends it all (CCC 32). A streak of ancient cosmic dust burning across a dark April sky is, quite literally, a love letter you can read without a theology degree.

Isaiah 40:31 |
"They that hope in the LORD will renew their strength, they will soar on eagles' wings; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not grow faint."
Laudato Si' (Care for Our Common Home)
Pope Francis wrote in Laudato Si' that every creature reflects something of God and has a message to teach us (LS 69). The return of golden eagles to English skies is a small resurrection story, proof that when humans choose stewardship over exploitation, creation responds with the kind of glory Isaiah promised.

Saint of the Day |
April 13 |
St. Martin I
Martin I is the last pope recognized as a martyr. He was kidnapped from Rome by the Byzantine emperor's soldiers, dragged to Constantinople, publicly humiliated, and exiled to Crimea where he slowly starved to death. His final letters beg for food and complain that even his jailers have forgotten him. He never recanted.
His feast day is April 13, and his refusal to compromise truth under political pressure speaks directly to today's stories about accountability in public life.
Trivia Answer
A . St. Augustine cited John 3:5 extensively in his debates with the Pelagians, arguing that even infants need baptism because Jesus said 'no one' can enter the kingdom without being born of water and Spirit. His interpretation shaped the Church's teaching on baptismal necessity for centuries (CCC 1257).
