The Objection
"The Bible alone is all Christians need. Catholic 'Tradition' is just man-made additions that corrupt the pure Word of God."
The Catholic Response
Paul himself commands the Thessalonians to hold fast to the traditions they received "whether by an oral statement or by a letter of ours" (2 Thessalonians 2:15), placing oral Tradition on equal footing with his written words. The Bible itself never claims to be the sole rule of faith; in fact, John's Gospel ends by saying Jesus did many other things that are not written down (John 21:25). The early Church lived, worshipped, and baptized for decades before the New Testament was even completed, and it was the Catholic Church's tradition and authority that determined which books belonged in the Bible at the Councils of Hippo (393) and Carthage (397). As the Catechism teaches, Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition "are bound closely together and communicate one with the other" as a single deposit of faith (CCC 80).

The Catechism warns against covetousness, the disordered desire for possessing what we do not need (CCC 2536). Pope Francis wrote in Laudato Si' that a culture of instant gratification and compulsive consumption makes people "unable to set limits on their immediate needs" (203). Leasing programs that ensure you never stop upgrading are designed to exploit exactly that impulse.

After generations of displacement, broken treaties, and cultural erasure, these graduation rates are a harvest that was watered with real tears. The Catechism teaches that the common good requires social conditions that allow groups and individuals to reach their fulfillment (CCC 1908). This milestone is what that principle looks like when communities refuse to give up on it.

Blessed Stanley Rother
Stanley Rother was an Oklahoma farm boy who flunked out of one seminary because he couldn't pass Latin. He transferred, got ordained, and eventually learned the Tz'utujil Mayan language so well that he translated the New Testament into it for his parishioners in Guatemala. He was murdered by a government death squad in 1981 and became the first recognized martyr born in the United States.
His feast day is July 28, and his story of refusing to abandon his people, even when told to flee, echoes today's Gospel about wheat and weeds growing together until the harvest.

B . Darnel (Lolium temulentum) looks almost identical to wheat as it grows, making it impossible to pull without uprooting good plants. Only at harvest, when wheat bows heavy with grain and darnel stands straight and empty, can you tell them apart. Jesus chose a weed his audience had actually cursed in their own fields.
