Matthew 5:1-12
"Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the hill. There he sat down and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven.
Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you."

Pope Leo XIV made history by addressing Spain's Congress of Deputies, declaring that truly democratic societies must defend every human life and promote freedom of thought and conscience. Speaking directly to lawmakers during his apostolic journey, he connected Gospel values to the foundations of just governance.

"By waiting and by calm you shall be saved, in quiet and in trust shall be your strength. But this you did not will."
CCC 2307-2309 (Just War Doctrine and Conditions for Peace)
The Catechism is blunt: war is never the first answer, and every other means of resolving conflict must be exhausted before force is justified (CCC 2309). When truces shatter and plagues spread unchecked, the double failure is the same: human life treated as expendable rather than sacred.

"Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove that splinter from your eye,' while the wooden beam is in your eye?"
CCC 1807 (The Virtue of Justice)
Justice, the Catechism says, "consists in the firm and constant will to give God and neighbor their due" (CCC 1807). The moment we rank political advantage above honest accountability, we've swapped justice for strategy, and the Gospel has a word for that: hypocrisy.

A California condor flew into Oregon for the first time since 1904, a stunning sign of recovery for a species once down to just 22 birds on Earth.

"How varied are your works, Lord! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, great and wide!"
Laudato Si' 33 (Pope Francis, 2015)
Pope Francis wrote that the disappearance of any species is like tearing a page from a book God is still writing (Laudato Si', 33). A condor crossing into Oregon after 122 years is a small resurrection, proof that patient stewardship can help restore what carelessness nearly destroyed.

Papal Authority |
|
|
The Objection
"Why do Catholics believe the Pope can speak infallibly? He's just a man. No human being should have that kind of authority over what other people believe."
The Catholic Response
Papal infallibility is far narrower than most people think. It applies only when the Pope speaks ex cathedra, meaning as shepherd of the whole Church, on a matter of faith or morals, with the clear intention of binding all the faithful (CCC 891). This has been formally invoked only twice in history: the Immaculate Conception in 1854 and the Assumption in 1950. Jesus himself gave Peter a unique authority among the apostles, saying "whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matthew 16:18-19), and Catholics believe that authority passed to Peter's successors, not as a personal superpower but as a protection the Holy Spirit provides so the Church cannot officially teach error on essential matters of salvation.

Saint of the Day |
June 8 |
|
|
St. Medard of Noyon
According to French legend, when Medard was a child, an eagle spread its wings over him during a rainstorm, keeping him completely dry. This story became so famous that for centuries, French farmers believed that whatever the weather was on June 8 would last for the next 40 days. He's basically France's version of Groundhog Day, but with an eagle.
His feast is June 8, and like Elijah in today's first reading, he is forever linked to weather, rain, and God's providence through creation.

Trivia Answer
B . In Luke 12:24, Jesus points to ravens as proof of God's providence: they do no farming, own no barns, yet God provides for them. It's a direct callback to the Elijah story, where ravens literally become the instruments of God's provision.
